Why is it that Steadicams have been able to maintain a certain type of quality and rate? I know the original purchase cost is more than a JJ, but in most cases you don't see studios hiring Steadicam operators w/o their own gear. Besides have you checked out a standard rate for a good steadicam owner/ operator lately, it is about twice that of a Jib owner / operator. I feel that to be good at operating either piece of equipment takes about the same amount of skill and expertise, in most situations. Keep in mind that the chance of injuring or killing someone with a steadicam is much less likely then with a jib.
I don't have the luxury of turning down jobs that don't let me bring my own Jib. It seams like every time I do use a stages jib it needs to be re-cabled and generally does not work all that great, because of lack of maintenance.
I don't know about other owner/ operators out there, but I generally hide a portion of my operating rate into the rental of my jib. It seams that most studios would rather pay more for the rental of a piece of equipment then for the experience of the person operating it. When I am just operating someone elses jib, you better believe the studio does not want to pay more then a normal jib rate.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might be able to change the industry into realizing that (like the steadicam) it just isn't the piece of equipment but the experience of the person operating it? My theory is that there are just too many jib owner/ operators, and jib rental houses low balling everyone else. I feel I could work more if I did the same thing, but don't feel right about doing it. It just hurts everyone else out there. I have been a camera operator since 85 and have been flying jibs and remote heads since 92, and feel like I am wasting my talent when I work super cheep.
When I first started flying jibs I did charge clients a lot less then I do now because I was just learning. One day I got a very big lecture from another owner/ operator on the evils of cutting the jib rental rate. Needless to say I immediately stopped reducing the jib rate, and ended up telling the client that since I was just learning the operating rate could be cut but the rental was not.
Lets face it being a jib operator comes with a bit of responsibility, most of the shots we do are basically created by us. The director or DP gives us an idea of what he/ she wants and then we figure out the best way to achieve it. We don't make bad money, but I feel we should be compensated and treated a little more like a steadicam operator.
I am done venting my frustrations, and feel much better now.
THANKS
